Iabadiou Piko

(b. 1984, Indonesian)

Iabadiou Piko is an artist based on Yogyakarta. Through his abstract expression, Piko analyzes and outlines perceptual experiences. With patterns of intuition and free association, he marks psychological and philosophical behavior that alters one’s feelings and character. His process of experimentation allowed him to better understand the concepts of time, circumstance, and space. Piko’s works mainly revolve around both material and color exploration. Releasing his inner child is a part of Piko’s artistic process; freedom, flow, and spontaneity when scribbling, piling, blocking, and mixing different materials. He observes his works just like when he introspects himself. He repeats this process until he feels satisfied with his work.

Piko’s works are spontaneous-with no prior planning. There is an element of surprise that comes with this working process. As he refines his work, he creates markings based on fragments of reality, memories, imagination, atmosphere, and familiar settings as a method of synthesizing ideas, feelings, distortion, and projection from the soul. Pico’s works are a visual journey that investigates the momentum of aesthetic nature and mentality with human relationships and their society. He explores complex emotions such as tension, fear, fragility, loneliness, anger, happiness, sadness, wildness, mysteriousness, destruction, badness, addiction, and silent death. Piko believes that humans are influenced by Allah and have an attachment to the influences of their society, environment, or nature. Piko allows the audience to see space through a different perspective based on their free association. As they examine the piece, they are brought into their own space.

Piko has held numerous solo exhibitions including Haiku Aku, Hatch Art Project, Singapore (2019); Catharsis, Mono 8 Gallery, Manila, Philippines (2019); Tegak Lurus Dengan Sunyi, ART DUBAI 12TH EDITION, Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, UAE (2018); The Storm of Perception, Nunu Fine Art, Taipei, Taiwan (2018); Menumpuk Di Atas Hamparan, D Gallerie, Jakarta, Indonesia (2017); and Proporsi Biru “Der Anteil des Blaus,” Galerie Michael Janssen, Berlin, Germany (2016). He has participated in selected international group exhibitions in Bangkok, Manila, Taipei, Seoul, Beijing, New York, Chiang Mai, Skopje, Colorado, Canada, Portugal, Singapore, and Indonesia. In 2014, The Top 10 of Asia magazine included Piko in the list of Asia’s ten most inspiring visual artists. Piko’s residencies include Art Dubai Residency Programme for 12th Edition at Ware House 421, Abu Dhabi, UAE (2018);  Luzhunan Historical House Residency at Luzhunan, Miaoli, Taiwan (2016); Transit #3 Residency at Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, Bandung (2015) and Residency at Mono 8 Gallery Manila, Philippine, collaboration with 1335 Mabini, Makati.
