Akiq AW

Akiq Abdul Wahid (born in Kediri, East Java) is an Indonesian artist who lives and works in Yogyakarta. His long-term projects investigate the tactics of everyday life along with surroundings, how humans face realities through innovations and strategies that they created. His first notable photo series, The Order of Things, tells a story of how people live in their imagination and creativity; photographs of “installations” made by local Indonesian people.

Akiq AW has held solo exhibitions or participated in group exhibitions along with Mes 56’s members. His solo exhibitions include Courtesy of The Artists at LIR Space, Yogyakarta (2019), Satu Langkah Seribu Langkah at Ark Galerie, Yogyakarta (2017), Border V 2.0 at Chan Contemporary, Darwin, Australia (2014) and more. His work One Man Different God had been shown in the Jogja Biennale 13 in 2011. With Mes 56, he was part of the exhibition at Song Eun Art Space in Seoul, South Korea (2016), and CCP Melbourne (2013). He participated in Contemporary World at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra in 2019, 38th EVA International Ireland’s Biennale 2018 and Dak’Art 2018, The Biennale of Contemporary African Art, Dakar, Senegal. He is also an experienced curator, having curated and directed several exhibitions, including becoming an artistic director for the Archive Festival Exhibition organized by Indonesian Visual Art Archive (2017) and co-curator of 15th Edition of Jogja Biennale in 2019.
