Dian Utami
(1992)
Dian Utami is a self-taught embroidery artist based in Yogyakarta. Her favourite medium to work in hand-embroidery, giving her ample time to reflect on the subject matter at hand. Tami creates contemporary embroidered artwork about our connection to time, place, memory, and interpersonal relationships. The ordinary objects around her as the base to her embroidery work. Tami uses just a few techniques to build the surfaces and textures of her work. The complexity of each piece stemming from the composition itself and deliberate use of color. Combining materials and techniques in unexpected ways is what drives her creative process. This meditative creative process is embedded in the final work, encouraging an intuitive contemplative response from the viewer.
