Kinez Riza

(b. 1989, Indonesian)

Kinez Riza is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Bali, Indonesia. She explores representations of reality and identity in correlation to Nature, Time, and the Sublime. Kinez’s works revolve around the realm of film, photography, sculpture, painting and ephemeral installations, often embedding evocative objects and artifacts. She contemplates discourses from the arts and sciences in her work, noting the tension between the two as ways of disseminating ideas regarding identity. Some of her work stages the documentation of scientific research and found artifacts in a composition inspired by contemporary photography, bringing a subtle yet impactful image. A large part of her practice involves artist-led expeditions, whether it is independent or institution-based expeditions.

Kinez has been exhibited in Indonesia and abroad, including S.E.A. Focus, Singapore (2019); Art Stage, Singapore (2016); The Rotunda, IFC, Hong Kong (2015); Unseen Photo Fair, Amsterdam (2014); and Art Dubai, UAE (2012) amongst others. She participated with Land Art Mongolia 360 Biennale (2014), The Arctic Circle Org residency program (2013) and the Jogja Biennale (2017). In 2018, she was a guest lecturer at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. In 2019, she was featured in a publication as one of ‘20+1 Indonesian Women Artists: Into the Future’, leading to a group exhibition at the National Gallery Indonesia.

Her coverage of the world’s earliest forms of representational art in Sulawesi and Borneo, alongside the 2016 Homo floresiensis findings in Flores has been published widely by the international media, including CNN, The New York Times, National Geographic, BBC, and more.
